Moorings Bay is a vibrant coastal community with a rich history. Once a shallow sheltered bay area dominated by dense mangrove habitat, Moorings Bay has undergone significant transformation over the years. 

Milton Link, a developer, created The Moorings for Julio Lobo, a Cuban entrepreneur known as the "King of Sugar." In 1957, he had negotiated to buy the Crayton Tract, 1,300 acres of land where The Moorings of Naples now stands. The deal closed for 300 of the 1,300 acres, costing $1.5 million. The property was purchased from the 33 Investment Corp. (A Collier subsidiary), named for the section in which it was located. Over the next three to four years, Link bought three more parcels for $3 million, bringing Lobo's total acreage to 960. From this land, The Moorings of Naples evolved. 

In 1960, Doctors Pass, the only inlet that connects Moorings Bay to the Gulf of Mexico, was widened and dredged, and two boulder-mound jetties were constructed to prevent migration. At the same time, construction began on The Moorings, a large residential development that would alter the size and shape of Moorings Bay. Within 20 years, development had completely transformed the shape, depth, and size of the waterbody. As a result of this long history of alteration and development, Moorings Bay is now considered a completely artificial waterbody.
